What is Arthritis?

Arthritis simply means joint inflammation, a condition characterized by joint pain, stiffness, and a reduced range of motion. Scientifically, Arthritis points to more than 200 forms of joint conditions.

The external symptoms of arthritis include difficulty in movement, stiffness, and swelling. These characteristics often get worse with age. If we look at it internally, it is a common condition and many senior citizens can be seen struggling to walk due to this condition. If one is suffering from such a condition, it is best to visit an Arthritis Specialist.

Types of arthritis

There are mainly two types of arthritis-

  1.    Osteoarthritis
  2.    Rheumatoid arthritis

1. Osteoarthritis– it causes the breakdown of cartilage. Cartilage is the soft tissue which joins bones with other bones. It is the connective tissue between bones. With its break down, the knees become stiff and the movement becomes painful.

2. Rheumatoid arthritis-It results in the destruction of the lining of the joints.

3. Other Reasons – arthritis can be caused due to some other underlying condition such as uric acid crystals, psoriasis or lupus.

The treatment depends on the type of arthritis one is suffering from. The treatment methodology aims at reducing the symptoms and improving the functionality of the knees. The treatment may be given in the following forms-

Medications

  • Analgesics-They helps in pain reduction but don’t have any effect on the inflammation.
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)-These are useful in reducing the pain as well as inflammation. Ibuprofen is a common example. Some are also available in the form of gels and medicines.
